As the number of people living in cities continues to grow, space is unfortunately becoming less meaningful and engaging to citizens.  Project on Spatial Sciences is an initiative formed by a group of Harvard University colleagues to challenge the role of space in contemporary life.  By introducing science into the study of space we investigate a body of under-researched spatial properties, such as sounds, chemicals, and communication networks.  If appropriately designed, these properties can heighten the relationship between space and its inhabitants, resulting in a new dimensionality for space-making.  The mission is to engage space design as a transdisciplinary action and to disseminate the resulting knowledge through multiple avenues.

WORK BY PROJECT ON SPATIAL SCIENCES IS COMPOSED OF:

RESEARCH

We begin by asking ourselves a simple question, what is space?  Through scholarly research, transdisciplinary collaborations, and scientific experiments we test and collect data, strive for innovation, and ultimately discover new ways of shaping space.

PRODUCTS

With our research we are able to invent patents and develop intellectual property into viable industrial applications.  We see products as another way to disseminate our research findings to the market while simultaneously providing consumers with new ways to engage the spaces they live in.

OUTREACH

Through unconventional mediums we present our research, products, and ideas on space to the public.  We coordinate lectures, colloquium, exhibitions, and performances to communicate the many ways that all people and disciplines are responsible for the production and habitation of space.

SPATIAL CONSULTING

We offer our innovation, knowledge, and ideas on space as a service to groups interested in learning how to maximize the potentials of space and its properties.
